Knee pain in active adults

A randomised controlled trial in young, physically active adults recorded activity-related knee pain over twelve weeks at a daily quantity of 5 grams of specific collagen peptides. Both participant reports and medical findings were recorded. The peptides used there were not, however, from marine collagen.

Limits on transferability

The majority of joint studies work with peptides from cattle or pigs. Results from those cannot simply be transferred to marine collagen, because the collagen type and peptide profile differ.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease and belongs in medical hands. Food supplements are not a substitute for that. Anyone with persistent joint complaints is better off having them assessed than masking them.

Hair and nails are not made of collagen but of keratin. That is a different protein with a different structure.

What the actual connection is

Collagen peptides supply amino acids such as proline and glycine, which the body also uses to form keratin. The connection therefore runs through the building blocks, not through the end product.

What has been studied

Hair

There are studies that recorded hair density and hair breakage over several months. They are smaller and fewer than the skin studies. Some of them used combination products containing other nutrients alongside collagen.

Nails

On brittle nails there are studies over periods of around 24 weeks that recorded how often nails broke and how fast they grew. The best known of these used collagen peptides from cattle, not from fish.

Anyone reading figures from such studies is best served by checking which collagen was actually used.

Brittle nails and hair loss can also have other causes, such as an iron deficiency or a thyroid finding. That belongs with a doctor before anyone tries to solve it through diet.

Research on collagen peptides can be sorted into areas that are supported to differing degrees.

Amino acid profile

Marine collagen is rich in glycine, proline and hydroxyproline. These three amino acids make up the bulk of the collagen molecule and occur less often in a normal mixed diet.

How dense the evidence is

Skin

Skin has the most controlled studies. Wrinkle depth, elasticity and moisture content were recorded over eight to twelve weeks, mostly at daily quantities between 2.5 and 10 grams.

Joints

For joints there are studies using discomfort and mobility scores. The majority of them worked with peptides from cattle or pigs.

Hair and nails

Here the evidence is thinnest: small participant numbers and frequently combined products.

No dependable statement about an effect on inflammatory processes can be drawn from this literature.
